Week 22

Here are some highlights from the week... Our geologists did a final experiment that was quite tasty! They took 3 starburst and pressed them together to represent how sedimentary rocks are formed. After they had their sedimentary starburst, they applied heat (breath) and pressure (pushing) to turn it into a metamorphic rock! On Tuesday, we created a classroom kindness web. As we continue to build friendships and problem solving skills, we took some time out of our day to compliment each other and spread kindness. We discussed that when you choose kindness, it spreads. We also talked about how "you get what you give" and when you give respect, you get respect! Week 35

Here are some highlights from the week... The entomologists began their study of insects with mealworm larva. Each kiddo will be studying their larva while we learn about the life cycle of and traits of insects. In writing, the students have been publishing their realistic fiction stories. Some have even been creating their own series of books! The first grade farmers had a great time at Plumper Pumpkin Farm! They got to learn about bees, plant pumpkin seeds, go on a hayride and see lots of animals! A HUGE thank you to the parent chaperones -- the field trip would not have been possible without you! First Week!

Wow! What a great first week and what an incredible group of kiddos. The first hour of class I kept telling them that I could not believe it was their first day of first grade because they all seemed to get back into "school mode" pretty quickly - maybe even faster than me! We focused a lot on classroom routines and will continue to develop routines, transitions and expectations throughout these first weeks in order to build a strong learning community. On the first day of school we read "First Day Jitters," a story that talks about how we all get nervous for the first day of school - even teachers! Throughout the week we have been checking our understanding while we read. When you read with your child I encourage you to help them use this strategy - pause and ask "do I understand what just happened?" "what do I know about the characters?" "what is the author trying to tell me?" Asking these questions and modeling that all readers us...
