Week 37

Here are some highlights from the week...

On Thursday, we had Ms. Pawol's mom come visit Stephenson. She brought all of the entomologists their own study vials for a ladybug hunt! She also gave each student their own box of crayons and a ladybug pencil. There's nothing better than a fresh new box of crayons, and to celebrate we read one of my favorite books, "The Day the Crayons Quit." Hopefully the first graders can keep all of their crayons happy!

The entomologists have gotten to see the complete metamorphosis of their meal worm larvae! Some students now have darkling beetles crawling around in their study vials :)

Our farms are filled with goats, sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and horses! To calculate their payments, the mathematicians have been adding double digit numbers together. They have been breaking the numbers apart into tens and ones and adding them back together.

Word Scramble: We have been building our vocabulary all year long, here is an activity you can do at home to continue building vocab!

What You Need: A sheet of white paper, Marker, Dictionary

What You Do: 1. Ask your kid to use the market to divide the paper into six even squares.
2. Take over duties and think up six words (for example, pillow, television, table, shoe, kitchen, and plate). Look up the definition of each term in the dictionary.
3. Then, with the marker, write one definition in each of the six boxes on the paper. DO NOT WRITE THE TERMS. The definitions will serve as hints.
4. Then, below each definition, write a scrambled version of the word matching the definition.
For example, if you were to use the word pillow, the square might look like this.
A cushion support for the head or other parts of the body, usually used while sleeping. lwoipl
5. When you're finished, pass the marker and paper to your child. 6. To win the game, they must correctly figure out the scrambled word in each square.

For an extra challenge,  you can switch roles!
