Week 18

Some highlights from the week...

We are continuing to add strategies to our Word Detective tool belts. This week we have been focusing on using snap words that we know to help us decode mystery words. Example: If I know the word "out" in a snap, it can help me read the word "about" or "shout."
As word detectives, when we know a word we don't have to solve it over and over again, just like detectives don't have to solve the same mystery over and over again! We also learned ways to break long words into smaller parts using syllables!

In writing, we are beginning our opinion writing unit. First graders can be very opinionated :). This unit helps them develop their opinions and plan/write their reasons to support them!

In science this week we did an experiment with sand. The first grade geologists used the sand that we sifted out from the river rocks and put it in a vial with water. They made observations about the dry sand and then made observations after they added the water. Finally, they made predictions about what would happen to the sand and water when it was left over night. We will have to wait to see on Tuesday!

As we get back into school mode after winter break we are really practicing active listening. Here are some activities you can do at home to practice and support your kiddo's listening skills:

  • Use a "talking stick" at meal times or family times to reinforce who is the speaker and who is the listener.
  • Sit back to back and have one person describe a picture and the other person draw it.
  • Do 3! To play, take turns giving three directions to follow (ex. jump up and down, draw a heart, hold up a green crayon).  Great way to practice following multiple directions and the kiddos will love getting the chance to tell you 3 things to do!
  • Simon Says
  • Telephone
